Government announces House dissolution

General NewsThe government announced a dissolution of the House of Representatives Friday evening, returning the power to the Thai electorate with a snap election set on April 2.

The House dissolution is aimed at re-conciliating political differences, ending the current political uncertainty and avoid a possible unrest caused by continued demonstrations against the administration, which is at risk of being stirred out of control by 'a third hand', the government said in a statement.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra requested an audience with His Majesty the King at the Chitralada Villa of the Dusit Palace here Friday afternoon.

His Majesty the King then signed a Royal Decree endorsing the House dissolution.

Mr.Thaksin told a live TV broadcast that he decided to dissolve the Lower House in accordance with a democratic rule to ease the political pressure and to prevent adverse affects on the Thai politics and economy caused by the anti-government moves.

"I accept and respect the publics decision, but will never bow to any outlawed forces and decision," he stressed. He said his administration would continue to be the caretaker government until the new administration is in office.

According to the Election Commission of Thailand (EC), a snap election must be held within 60 days after a House dissolution.

Mr. Thaksin said he discussed with the EC and agreed that the snap election be held on April 2 so that its official results would be announced by May 2 when the House would convene to elect a new prime minister. The newly-elected premier would then be able to form a new cabinet which could be sworn in and start its work by early June, he noted.

Mr. Thaksin said, in the meantime, his caretaker administration would continue to work for the nation, forging ahead with development measures and policies, including government-supported mega projects, for continuing political stability and steady economic growth.
