Bangkok Monday Morning, 31 Death in Clashes

General NewsFour days of intense fighting between Thai troops and anti-government protesters have left at least 31 people dead in Bangkok.

Bangkok emergency services said late Sunday that 230 people were also injured in violent clashes in the Thai capital that erupted on Thursday.

The government has promised to continue sealing the camped protesters inside a business district to cut them off from the rest of Bangkok, AFP reported.

The authorities have imposed a state of emergency in more than 20 provinces to allow security forces to control protests. Bangkok and several provinces are now under emergency rule.

The government has urged the opposition leaders to surrender. Meanwhile, anti-government protesters want the premier to withdraw his soldiers.

The government has ruled out negotiations with the protesters and canceled an election offer put forward by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to end the dispute.

The opposition has called for UN-mediated talks with the government to end days of clashes which have left dozens dead.

But government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn has rejected the call. "We reject their demands for UN mediation... No Thai government has ever let anyone intervene with our internal affairs."

At least 61 people have died since mid-March, while more than 1,700 others are reported to have been injured.

Meanwhile, the red-shirts said they will continue fighting until the government takes responsibility for the deadly violence.
