The Chinese People's Daily reports that a Thai worker died in Taiwan police custody on Friday, according to media reports from Taipei. The 45-year-old worker from Thailand, identified by local media as Ha-chi (which sounds not to much like a Thai name), was arrested during a routine road check on Monday; local media quoted an official of the Hualien County Police Bureau as saying, without giving further details on why he was arrested.
The incident happened when the Thai worker was to be moved to the Sanshia Detention Center for Foreigners to await deportation, according to local media.
According to the local police, Ha became so distressed after two days in custody that he created uproar by hitting his head against the iron bars, killing himself.
The policeman said Ha died after being hospitalized and that an autopsy was being conducted to ascertain the cause of death.
